GMA Network once again brought honor to the country by clinching seven world medals at the recently concluded 2014 New York Festivals International TV & Film Awards.

Among the Filipino awardees, the Kapuso Network went home with the most number of awards—eleven in total, including four finalist certificates—and sent the biggest contingent to the recognition ceremonies held last April 8 at the 2014 NAB Show in Las Vegas.

Weekday news magazine program Tunay na Buhay led GMA Network’s esteemed list of winners with its Gold World Medal in the Community Portraits category. The winning entry “Mga Sanggol at Langaw” episode featured the sub-human conditions in the slums of Tondo, Manila where majority of the residents barely make a living out of scavenging among mountains of trash.

Meanwhile, its high regard for culture and history made the children’s show Tropang Potchi a big winner in the Children/Youth Program category, bringing home a Silver World Medal for the episode “Talaandig Tribe,” which brought forth to public consciousness the customs and traditions of the Talaandig Tribe of Bukidnon.

GMA News TV’s Reel Time triumphed with its documentary titled “Silang Wala sa Mapa,” a story on how the B’laan indigenous people of Mindanao survived generations without modern medicine, giving the program a Silver World Medal in the Community Service Program category. Also a Peabody awardee, Reel Time has been a constant contender in the New York Festivals, winning a Silver World Medal for its “Salat” episode in 2013 and receiving Finalist Certificates for its “Lusong” and “Tira” episodes in 2012.

News magazine program Brigada, in turn, took home the Silver World Medal in the Community Portraits category for its “Gintong Krudo at Sipa ng Pag-asa” stories. Reporter Micaela Papa showed the story of impoverished children who swim through the filthy waters of the Navotas Fish Port to collect and sell spilled petroleum oil in “Gintong Krudo”; while Steve Dailisan’s “Sipa ng Pag-asa” told of an inspiring report on the lives of young garbage collectors in Payatas who dream to rise from poverty through football.

News TV Quick Response Team won the Bronze World Medal in the Best Coverage of Breaking News category for its live on-the-ground reportage, led by anchor Jiggy Manicad, of the Zamboanga siege.

Front Row, likewise, was presented the Bronze World Medal in the Community Portraits category for the episode “Lusong Dunong,” a story on the pupils and teachers of San Esteban Elementary School in Pampanga who hold classes in flooded rooms.

GMA News’ advocacy campaign for a well-informed 2013 elections dubbed “Dapat Tama,” meanwhile, was given the Bronze World Medal in the Music Video Category.

GMA News pillar Jessica Soho, widely regarded as the country’s most awarded broadcast news journalist, received the Finalist Certificate for the Best News Reporter/Correspondent category for her “Photographs of Typhoon Pablo” special report aired in Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, which captured the pain and suffering in the wake of Typhoon Pablo.

Also awarded the Finalist Certificate were I-Witness’ “Ganito Tayo Noong Martial Law” documentary in the History & Society category; GMA News & Public Affairs’ election project Camera Juan in the Social Issues category; and GMA Program Support Department’s advocacy campaign Diploma in the Station/Image Promotion category.

Now on its 57th year of honoring programming in all lengths and forms and naming them as the world’s best in TV and films, the New York Festivals selected the winners from thousands of entries received from over 50 countries.

These prize-winning Kapuso programs can be seen on its flagship international channel, GMA Pinoy TV, its lifestyle channel, GMA Life TV, and international news channel, GMA News TV International.

GMA Network (GMA) continued to pull away from competition in the viewer-rich areas of Urban Luzon and Mega Manila in April, according to data from the industry’s leading ratings service provider Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

The Pacquiao-Bradley match (Pacquiao-Bradley II: Vindication), which aired on GMA Channel 7, ruled the charts in NUTAM (National Urban Television Audience Measurement), Urban Luzon and Mega Manila.

For the period April 1 to 30 (April 20 to 30 based on overnight data), GMA recorded a total day audience share of 37 percent, ahead of ABS-CBN’s 32.2 percent by 4.8 points, and ahead of TV5’s 10.5 percent by 26.5 points. Urban Luzon makes up 77 percent of the total urban television households in the country.

Relative to the previous month, GMA’s total day margin over ABS-CBN and TV5 grew from 4 to 4.8 points, and from 24.7 to 26.5 points, respectively.

More Kapuso shows figured in the list of top programs (including specials) in Urban Luzon, totalling 19 out of 30. Joining Pacquiao-Bradley II: Vindication in the top 10 were weekly drama anthology Magpakailanman, multi-awarded news magazine program Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (KMJS), Inang Yaya (Holy Week special), weekend game show Celebrity Bluff, and reality sitcom Pepito Manaloto: Ang Tunay na Kuwento.

Completing the list are Marley & Me (Holy Week special), primetime drama Carmela, Eat Bulaga’s Lenten special Hulog ng Langit, Saturday night comedy Vampire Ang Daddy Ko, Panalangin (Holy Week special), telefantasya Kambal Sirena, GMA’s flagship newscast 24 Oras, hard-hitting investigative program Imbestigador, the country’s longest running gag show Bubble Gang, Kapuso drama Rhodora X, and Holy Week specials A Walk to Remember, KMJS, and Slam Dunk.

In Mega Manila, which accounts for 60 percent of the urban TV household population in the country, GMA registered a 38.5 percent total day household average, up 8.6 points from ABS-CBN’s 29.9 percent, and up 27.1 points from TV5’s 11.4 percent.

GMA’s lead over ABS-CBN and TV5 also increased from 7.8 to 8.6 points, and from 25.2 to 27.1 points, respectively, compared to last month.

Majority (21 out of 30) of the top-rating shows in Mega Manila were from GMA. In the top 10 with the Pacquiao-Bradley match were Magpakailanman, KMJS, Inang Yaya (Holy Week special), Celebrity Bluff, Eat Bulaga’s Lenten special Hulog ng Langit, Carmela, Marley & Me, and Pepito Manaloto Ang Tunay na Kuwento.

Likewise scoring high ratings in Mega Manila were Vampire Ang Daddy Ko, Bubble Gang, Kambal Sirena, Panalangin (Holy Week special), Imbestigador, Rhodora X, 24 Oras, Holy Week specials A Walk to Remember, KMJS, Banal na Paglalakbay, Koreanovela 100-Year Old Legacy, and the country’s longest running noontime show Eat Bulaga.

GMA’s lead in both Urban Luzon and Mega Manila was driven by its strong performance in the morning block. It also continued to dominate rival networks in the afternoon and evening blocks in the said areas.

GMA, meanwhile, closes the gap with ABS-CBN in NUTAM as a result of its significant lead in the morning block, scoring 38.3 percent compared to ABS-CBN’s 27.5 percent and TV5’s 12.3 percent.

GMA and TV5 subscribe to Nielsen TV Audience Measurement while ABS-CBN is the lone local major TV network that reportedly subscribes to Kantar Media, formerly known as TNS.

In Mega Manila, Nielsen TV Audience Measurement gathers data based on a sample size of 1,190 homes as compared to Kantar Media’s 770 homes. Meanwhile, Nielsen has a nationwide urban sample size of 2,000 homes, which is statistically higher than Kantar’s sample size of 1,370.

As a crowd gathered on Madison Avenue for the Philippine Independence Day event, enthusiastic fans lined up outside the GMA booth for a chance to share an intimate moment with their Kapuso idols. “I die without seeing dawn’s light shining on my country… You, who will see it, welcome it for me… Don’t forget those who fell during the nighttime.”
― Jose Rizal, Noli Me Tangere

He is widely regarded as the country’s most beloved hero. This Monday, get to know the man behind the hero as GMA News and Public Affairs brings to life the untold stories of Jose Rizal with the world premiere of the first-ever Bayaniseryeon primetime television, ILUSTRADO.

Ilustrado offers an educational and entertaining viewing experience as it features the life of Rizal as a young student in the Philippines to his travels in Europe as well as the major events and influences that shaped his mind and actions as a reformist. Through his letters to his family and friends, Ilustrado depicts Rizal’s struggles while living abroad. And through his love letters, the series tries to illustrate his relationship with women and why he is considered a notorious lover boy.

Produced by the same creative team behind the highly-acclaimed historical drama Katipunan and mini-series Bayan Ko, Ilustrado boasts of an ensemble of topnotch artists led by award-winning actor and Kapuso homegrown star Alden Richards as Jose Rizal.

Joining him are Kylie Padilla as Leonor Rivera, who many historians believe was Rizal’s true love, and Solenn Heussaff as Nellie Boustead, the French woman Rizal almost married.

Portraying the role of Rizal’s beloved parents are this year’s Cinemalaya best actress Eula Valdez (Teodora Alonzo) and Ricardo Cepeda (Francisco Mercado). Freddie Webb gives life to Rizal’s uncle, Don Jose Alberto, while Rizal’s brother Paciano Mercado is played by Marco Alcaraz. Child star Jhiz Deocareza plays the young Rizal.

Also incorporated in the Bayaniserye are fictional characters representing some of Rizal’s antagonists – mother and son Conchita and Venchito Monteverde (played by five-time Urian best actress Jaclyn Jose and Polo Ravales, respectively); Padre Amado (Lito Legaspi); and young Venchito (Sean Ross).

The cast also includes Max Collins as Consuela Ortiga, JC Tiuseco as Antonio Luna, Lucho Ayala as Jose Alejandrino, Bryan Benedict as Juan Luna, Jak Roberto as Maximo Viola, and Rhen Escano as Isidra Monteverde.

Under the direction of King Marc Baco, Ilustrado is filmed using the sophisticated Arri Alexa camera, along with equally high-end lenses provided by CMB Film Services Inc.  GMA Post Production, using up-to-date 3D visual effects technology, has recreated the grandeur of the European cities where Rizal lived and completed his novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.

The series’ theme song is composed and performed by Gloc9 featuring Lirah Bermudez with additional arrangement by Simon Tan.

Ilustrado, the first Bayaniserye on Philippine primetime, airs beginning Monday, October 20, 9:30pm right after Hiram na Alaala.

It will also air simultaneously on GMA Pinoy TV.  To learn more about Ilustrado’s airing schedule, visit GMA International’s website, www.gmanetwork.com/international, Facebook page, www.facebook.com/GMAPinoyTV, and follow GMA Pinoy TV on Twitter and Instagram via @gmapinoytv.

Philippines – GMA Network was recently at the heart of two of the Philippines’ biggest regional festivals, the Sinulog Festival in Cebu and Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo.

Before trooping to the streets of downtown Cebu City to witness the annual Sinulog Festival revelry, thousands of Cebuano Kapuso fans congregated in three of the city’s biggest malls to meet GMA’s premier artists led by Regine Velasquez-Alcasid and lead stars of drama series Healing Hearts, Second Chances and Once Upon a Kiss.

Regine was joined by Angelika de la Cruz, Joyce Ching and Kristoffer Martin, stars of the upcoming series Healing Hearts as they delivered outstanding performances before a delighted crowd.

Another set of Kapuso artists starred in back-to-back mall shows with the lead stars of the recently launched primetime series Second Chances—Jennylyn Mercado, Raymart Santiago, Camille Prats and Rafael Rosell—sharing the stage with the freshest love team of Miguel Tanfelix and Bianca Umali from the primetime series Once Upon a Kiss. Comedians Albert “Betong” Sumaya and Mike “Pekto” Nacua, who also star in the said series, added more fun to both shows.

Meanwhile, a delightful blend of feel-good shows and upbeat performances from GMA stars also spiced up this year’s Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo, the so-called City of Love.

This time, Once Upon A Kiss stars Miguel, Bianca, Pekto, and Betong once again ventured outside Manila to personally touch base with fans and went around from one stop to another via the Dinagyang Festival Corporate Parade.

Kapuso home-grown talent Ruru Madrid, who was a guest performer at the Iloilo Festival Queen and Hiyas Sang Iloilo beauty pageant served up a musical treat, which was very well received by a large audience.

Real-life sweethearts Lovi Poe and Rocco Nacino set the stage on fire as they regaled their supporters with a mesmerizing production number during a Kapuso Mall Show.

Moreover, Ang Lihim ni Annasandra’s Mikael Daez delivered a live coverage on the Ati Tribe Competition for GMA TV Western Visayas, to amuse the Ilonggo audience.

Furthermore, the lead stars of the newest GMA soap Kailan Ba Tama Ang Mali?—Geoff Eigenmann, Empress Schuck, Dion Ignacio, and Max Collins—drew in their share of huge followers during a Kapuso Mall Show in the region.

Geoff, Empress, and Dion, meanwhile, proceeded to the Freedom Grandstand right after the mall show to take part in the Dinagyang Festival Awarding Ceremonies.

In endeavoring to be one at heart with its viewers, GMA Network continues to celebrate the many customs and traditions that make up a truly unique Pinoy culture.

Show business may seem to be all about glitz and glamour. But what is often unknown to many is that life in the showbiz industry is tough. The long work hours, sometimes crazy schedule, and the hard work needed to pull off a good performance can really take up an artist’s time and energy.

However, despite the demands of the industry, a number of GMA Artist Center stars still manage to prioritize their education. Meet these Kapuso artists who recently celebrated their graduation, and get to know their thoughts on how taking the extra mile to finish school while juggling with work is worth it.

For teen idol Ruru Madrid, he considers education as the primary thing he should be focusing on. He devotes his time on studying, and it helps him develop a sense of self-discipline. This has become useful to him at work since he knows how to manage his time wisely. He shares, “Para ka ring nag-aaral kasi ‘pag nasa work.  You have to memorize your lines and dapat maintindihan mo talaga yung instructions and yung gusto ninyong ma-achieve sa eksena.  In a way, may similarity yung discipline ng acting and studying.”

School also taught Ruru a sense of achievement. He believes that dreams can only be achieved if one works hard for it. “Lahat naman siguro kami ito ang pangarap, yung pumasa at maka-graduate. Pero hindi mo makukuha ‘yun ng basta-basta. Kaya ang sarap pala ng feeling na nakamit mo yung goal mo sa buhay because of hard work and perseverance.  It makes your achievement sweeter kasi alam mong pinaghirapan mo.  Kaya, ito rin yung gagamitin kong motivation sa work ko as an artist.  I really have to work hard and develop my craft para maging isang mahusay na actor.”

Ruru’s on-screen partner Gabbi Garcia also finished high school recently. Gabbi, who has been a consistent member of her school’s student council, wants to continue with her studies and to fulfil her dream of being a pilot.

She admits that time management can be a bit challenging for her, but her parents are always there to guide her.  She shares how they appreciate all of her achievements and at the same time, keep her feet on the ground, and she wants to impart something with her fellow celebrities who are studying and working at the same time.

“I was taught that it is important to respect each and every one, as well as to be God-fearing. Being in the industry isn’t forever. Iba pa rin ‘pag nakapag-aral. If you really want to study while working, there will always be a way. You just have to be focused and determined in reaching your goal, and that is to graduate,” affirms the Kapuso actress.

Miguel Tanfelix, who also finished high school this year, shares his secret in maintaining balance between work and school.

“You have to plan your schedule for the week para alam mo kung kelan ka nasa work at ano yung time mo para mag-aral.  Marami ka ring sacrifice na dapat gawin. Walang imposible pag ginusto mo, so you got to have to the right motivation to make it work.  Pag nasa taping naman ako, I focus myself dun sa mga eksena ko and the way I act.  I guess the key is, you have to focus on what you do,” the Kapuso actor recommends.

It is a big help for Miguel that he didn’t get special treatment in school. He takes pride in having a normal life in school, and he feels glad to have a set of friends who supports him in both school work and celebrity-related commitments. He claims that having this set-up in school taught him how to deal with different people and develop self-discipline.

Both Derrick Monasterio and Miggy Jimenez take their modules to work as they study in between takes. And their hard work finally paid off as they are now ready to take the next step.

Derrick is planning to take up Law at San Beda College. And since he is busy with work, he knows that this will not be easy, “Nothing worth having comes easy, so if you want to achieve something, you have to work hard for it.”

Miggy, who was recognized in school as the most talented and most behaved, believes that celebrities should still know the value of education. “This is something you cannot exchange for anything, and you should never give up on your dreams. Strive hard so you can make it,” the teen actor shares.

Renz Valerio did not only graduate, he was even given a special academic citation and academic excellence awards. On learning one significant lesson from school, he shares that it is only ourselves who can lead our way to success. He claims, “Success starts with you. I had to struggle my way to finishing high school because there were lots of trials, but I am thankful to have had them because they have given me the opportunity to know who my true friends are. It revealed people who will always be there for me, such as my family. With these challenges, I managed to strive harder and finish high school with flying colors.”

Renz also shares that priorities should be well thought of, and education should always be on top of the list, “While your career may be something great, education will always be the greatest thing you will ever have. Always remember to have faith in yourself, because no one else will make the move for you. Lastly, have faith in God, because He always got good plans for each of us. It is just up to us on how we will reach the finish line.”

Finally, Charee Pineda shares her joy and pride after finishing her bachelor’s degree in Political Science. Aside from several showbiz commitments, Charee keeps herself busy in public service as she is currently a councilor in Valenzuela City.

For the Kapuso actress, being able to finish college amidst work difficulties is already an achievement and considers herself lucky to have supportive people in her life. “Communicating well and having an efficient support system, which are my family and staff, were and will always be best for me in dealing with work and school,” Charee closes.

The importance that these Kapuso artists give to having a good education serves as a much needed breath of fresh air to the industry. May they serve as an inspiration not only to their fellow celebrities but also to the rest of the young people to always keep their eyes on the prize.

This May, GMA Network presents the groundbreaking drama series, The Rich Man’s Daughter.

The show premieres on May 12 on GMA Pinoy TV. And in an effort to reach a wider audience, GMA’s flagship international channel will air the series with English subtitles.

This is a story about how a rich man, Oscar (Al Tantay), finds out that his daughter, Jade (Rhian Ramos), is a lesbian, how it propels him to offer five million pesos to the man who will marry her, and how it hurls the whole family into a series of discoveries.

And as Jade discovers something about herself, will she still be able to experience unconditional love from her family and friends? Will she be able to hold on to her personal truths and fight for her love even if it will destroy her family?

The drama project showcases Rhian Ramos’ versatility as an actress, as she breathes life to the character of Jade Tanchingco, her most challenging role to date.

The youngest and only daughter, Jade is the family’s jewel. And when she meets Althea, everyone’s perspective of her life and persona changes.

Making the drama series even more stellar are versatile actors and actresses.

Glaiza de Castro is Althea Guevarra, a smart, independent and driven woman, who is sexy, classy and a proud lesbian: a femme.

Luis Alandy is David Limjoco, Jade’s long-time boyfriend. He is educated, proud of his humble beginnings, and is very responsible. He longed to marry Jade one day and is challenged when Jade falls for someone else.

Katrina Halili is Wila Mateo, a femme lesbian and Althea’s ex-girlfriend. She vows to hate the person who Althea falls for.

Mike Tan is Paul Tanchingco, Jade’s older brother. He is a quiet and private person. He is also protective of Jade. Paul is a discreet gay.

Chynna Ortaleza is Batchi Luna, also a proud lesbian – a butch. She acts and dresses up like a man.

Sheena Halili as Sally Lim-Apolinario, Jade’s kikay and dependable bestfriend.

And Ms. Gloria Romero as Ama/Cecilia Tanchingco, the heart of the family. She spoils all her grand children especially Jade. She doesn’t really meddle when it comes to their businesses.  After being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, her life and her family’s lives become more intertwined.

Making the story more interesting are characters portrayed by multi-talented actors and actresses: Pauleen Luna as Pearl Sy-Tanchingco, Jade’s sister-in-law, married to Jade’s brother Gabriel. She is secretly jealous of her in-laws’ attention for Jade.  Paolo Contis as Anton Maceda, a guy who comes from an old rich family. He will become Jade’s fake suitor/boyfriend since he is just after the riches of the Tanchingcos; TJ Trinidad as Gabriel Tanchingco, the eldest son of Oscar and Amanda, the brother of Paul and Jade. He is being groomed and trained to lead their businesses. Gabriel will do anything for the family; Charee Pineda as Angeline San Jose, Gabriel’s real love. Gabriel left her for Pearl but she remains in love with him; Stephanie Sol as Abby Luna, Batchi’s femme live-in partner.

Completing the star-studded cast are respected TV and movie actors and actresses: Al Tantay as Oscar Tanchingco, the father of Gabriel, Paul and Jade.  He is the CEO and president of their family businesses. He treats Jade like a princess; Glydel Mercado as Amanda Tanchingco, the wife of Oscar. Oscar’s family didn’t approve of their relationship but when she gave birth to Jade, she is finally accepted and is treated as part of the family and she will do anything to keep it that way; Tony Mabesa as Angkong/John Tanchingco, the patriarch of the family. His favorite grand child is Jade and he will do everything for her.

The Rich Man’s Daughter is under the helm of the highly acclaimed director of Temptation of Wife and My Husband’s Lover, Dominic Zapata.

Don’t miss the much-awaited premiere of The Rich Man’s Daughter beginning May 12, Monday to Friday on GMA Pinoy TV.
